Meet ‘first’ Maasai moran Yoga instructor: Jacob Parit Noomek
Jacob Parit ole Noomek, a Maasai moran from Amboseli National Park, made history as the first Maasai to practice and teach yoga. His journey began with an encounter at a cultural village with an American yoga enthusiast, which opened the door for Parit to attend yoga training in Mombasa, and later in the United States under the Africa Yoga Project in 2009.
Now 50, Parit has become a passionate advocate for the physical and mental benefits of yoga, believing that it has the power to bring people together and transform lives. Despite initial resistance from his Maasai community, who viewed yoga as foreign or even mystical, Parit persevered. Over time, his dedication and the evident benefits of yoga have led to a growing acceptance among his community.
Today, Parit regularly leads yoga sessions for Maasai villagers and students, fostering a sense of unity and well-being. His work has extended beyond physical practice; through his connections with tourists visiting Amboseli, Parit has raised funds to build schools and provide scholarships for local children.
In collaboration with the My Chosen Vessels NGO, Parit also trains Maasai women who suffer from back pain due to carrying heavy loads of water and firewood. His work exemplifies how yoga can bridge cultural divides, improve health, and strengthen communities.
Parit’s contributions highlight the transformative potential of yoga, a practice that connects body, breath, and mind to promote overall health and wellness.
